It is rarely noticed but the presence of the father of the bride and the groom adds a special appeal to a wedding ceremony. Being big icons in the couple’s lives, the two need to be smart for this special day in their children’s lives and also create a good impression for their in-laws and guests.
Here are some tips on how the attire of the bride and groom’s father should look like.
The two major qualities of a father’s outfit are comfort and elegance. According to Denis Gabula, a fashion designer at Falcon Suits Kampala, the father of the bride or groom can opt for a suit or African wear like a kanzu or shirt and trouser that have a slight African design. However, Gabula adds that a kanzu must be coupled with a coat to avoid being shabby and because traditionally, that is how a kanzu is rightfully worn during ceremonies.
Colour and size
Colours like black, navy blue, dark blue, maroon and grey are age-appropriate yet they also bring out a certain sense of class in a person, which is exactly what both fathers need.
Gabula says since fathers are respectable figures in the family, having them wear very bright colours, say a shiny coat with patterns may be frowned upon.
When it comes to size, it wouldn’t be right for the groom or bride’s father to wear something very tight, and neither would it look good if they wore something oversized. Therefore, as the groom and his groomsmen look for the perfect attires, the father figures too shouldn’t be forgotten. Also remember that because fathers come from a different generation, many may prefer an oversized look, and thus need to be reassured about the appropriateness of the in vogue attire you help them choose.
Father and daughter matching outfit
A father matching with the bride doesn’t necessarily mean wearing the exact colour as that of the bride.
The bride’s father can, however, have a few details of his suit similar to the bride’s gown. For example, his tie may match some of the colours of flowers in the bride’s bouquet. This signifies the love and bond the two of you share and upholds the wedding theme.
Hawa Kalungi says on her wedding day, even though her wedding gown couldn’t match her father’s suit, she made sure when it came to the reception, her changing dress was the same colour as her father’s shirt and pocket square handkerchief.
Similarities between both fathers
If both the bride’s father and the groom’s father wear something similar, it will create a sense of unity among both families, so in case your families have hit it off well, you might as well consider some twinning in outfits
Kalungi says her father’s suit matched that of her father-in-law and the only things that differed were the tie, shirt and pocket square handkerchief.
To be creative, some of the features of the father’s outfits may alternate just for the looks to be more unique.
However, Gabula strongly cautions the bride and groom’s father from wearing outfits similar to those of the groomsmen.
