Just like photography, décor is one of the things that modern-day couples have chosen to invest in for their weddings. Couples love beautiful setups, something that will capture everyone’s eye and add beauty to their wedding event.
From simple ordinary décor, weddings have now evolved to décor based on themes, chandelier drippings, different types of roses, coloured and designed chairs, poles, lights and many other kinds of detail.
According to Ritah Elizabeth Namubiru of Desna Décor and Events, décor is usually categorized depending on certain themes that may be based on colour or time.
Vintage where a couple may choose to go for decor that depicts a certain period in time.
The modern theme which consists of design elements from the present like the Draped fabrics, crystal chandeliers, and tall centrepieces bringing a sophisticated look together. This is similar to the décor at Esther Musisi’s wedding (Jenifer Musisi’s daughter). The ceremony that took place at Mestil Hotel had fine class and sophisticated designs.
Rustic theme which is inspired by the simplicity of country life and references the outdoors.
Contemporary theme where weddings are full of on-trend inspiration. From contemporary table settings to cake designs, colour schemes and dresses.
Minimalist theme which usually aims to stick to solid colours. It tends to favour neutral and natural colours like black, cream, white and many others. This kind of theme can be related to NTV Uganda’s Flavia Tumusiime’s wedding with Andrew Kabura. Their décor was mostly plain white from flowers to the drapings.
Other themes may include the industrial theme, the transitional, romantic and many more.
The list of Décor themes and types is endless however, Namubiru says as someone that is in the decorating industry, there are themes that she would gladly recommend a couple to choose when it comes to their wedding.
Magical Mysticism;According to Namubiru, a decorator’s goal is to build some kind of joy and surprise for his/her client when they get to see the setup of their venue. When it comes to magical mysticism, the décor should be mysterious and magical, leaving people wondering how it was exactly created. The goal for this kind of décor is to create something exciting, mysterious and the whole venue is turned into something unbelievable.
Modern with a return to tradition
Namubiru says couples need to go for something up to date but add in some touch of tradition to it. For example, one may be familiar with weddings that have an African touch to them.
On the other hand, Namutebi Fathira, the CEO of Thrill events says the kind of décor she would recommend is something simple but elegant. Something that is not too sophisticated but still should be trendy and eye-catching.
She, however, adds that everyone has their own definition of simple and elegant. Therefore, there are factors that actually determine the kind of décor that will be suitable for the couple’s event.
The couple’s budget
Namutebi says couples usually have mental pictures, descriptions or phone images of what they want so when they approach an events planner or decorator, the first thing they do is describe or show him or her what they would want. However, Namutebi says the problem usually comes when the couple’s desires and their budget don’t go hand in hand, “Someone may come with high expectations and yet their budget cannot cater for what they want. All you have to do is help them look into other options that can work for them and fit right in their budget.”
Namubiru of Desna Décor and Events also adds that if the couple’s expectations do not fit in their budget, as decorators, they advise on the adjustments that can be made without totally draining their pockets.
interests and likes
All couples have things they fancy. These usually range from theme colours, favourite flowers, and many other things. According to Namubiru, these are the details that will help a decorator to determine the kind of theme and style that will align with their personalities and esthetic preferences.
It is therefore important for a decorator to get the couple to open up a little more and with the right details, one can’t fail to create a magical event.
Number of guests
The number of guests that a couple is willing to have will also determine their choice in décor. Here is how; according to Namutebi, your guest list determines your choice of venue and the choice of venue will eventually determine the kind of décor that fits right with it.
Namubiru says the venue plays an important role in wedding decorations. The size of the site will dictate the size of the decorations, as they need to be proportionate to the space available. The style of the venue should also align with the décor style. Clashing design styles and colours will take away the beauty of everything.
Sometimes venues also have restrictions that may influence decoration choices
“Some sites do not allow open flames, attaching things to walls or ceilings, loose flower petals, moving furniture etc,” Namubiru shares.
It is therefore important to get a list of any restrictions upfront so as to keep away from having costly surprises and failure to have your dream set up.
According to Namubiru, keeping up with trend and being creative when it comes to décor is very important, “Normally as decorators, we know what’s trending and what may not work at the moment so we give our advice. Even when it comes to the most rigid clients, you can draw them a picture and show them what may or might not work.
She however adds that not all trends are worth following. Décor is majorly meant to represent a couple’s style and this can be done in so many ways.
