{"id":20622,"date":"2022-02-24T10:29:31","date_gmt":"2022-02-24T07:29:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/?p=20622"},"modified":"2022-02-24T10:53:09","modified_gmt":"2022-02-24T07:53:09","slug":"indian-arrests-conman-who-married-18-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/?p=20622","title":{"rendered":"India arrests conman who married 18 women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By AFP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Bibhu Prakash Swain believed in soulmates and true love, or so he told at least 18 women he allegedly married and conned across India before his arrest \u2013 weeks before his next two weddings.<\/p>\n<p>The diminutive 67-year-old scoured marriage websites posing as a 51-year-old doctor and persuaded professors, lawyers, medics and a paramilitary officer all over the country to tie the knot, police said.<\/p>\n<p>In status-conscious India he claimed he was on a chunky salary, and used fake identification cards and appointment letters to bolster his credentials and family background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe primarily did this for their money, and some sexual pleasure,\u201d senior police official Sanjiv Satpathy told <em>AFP.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Satpathy&#8217;s team arrested Swain in recent days after months on his trail, discovering his multiple identities, bank accounts and plans for two weddings in February and March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was always very persuasive,\u201d Satpathy said, \u201cand only targeted successful single, widowed or divorced women in their late 40s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few \u201chappy and satisfying days into the marriage\u201d, the police said, Swain used to make excuses to borrow his new wives&#8217; money or jewellery to help him with an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>He then moved on to his next target, hoping that the women&#8217;s circumstances \u2013 as single, widowed or divorced women who had remarried in a conservative society \u2013 would scare them off going to the police.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By AFP \u00a0Bibhu Prakash Swain believed in soulmates and true love, or so he told at least 18 women he allegedly married and conned across India before his arrest \u2013 weeks before his next two weddings.
