This imitation guides<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">and develops <\/span><span class=\"s5\">the emcee\u2019s<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">character and poise at a Kwanjula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s5\">Having been in the industry for over seventeen years,<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"s5\">Swaleh Kiswiriri<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0has <\/span><span class=\"s5\">had to negotiate the barriers and corners of <\/span><span class=\"s5\">traditional wedding emceeing<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. His interest stretches as far back to<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> school where he says\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">his passion for<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> debate<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> gave him a platform to chair meetings and pushed him to take on the mantle to <\/span><span class=\"s5\">lead in speech<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> No meeting was safe from his contribution, he says, as he<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> lets us in on <\/span><span class=\"s5\">the experiences<\/span><span class=\"s5\">;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong>Using your experience, how does one learn to be able\u00a0<\/strong><strong>to speak able among so many people without breaking a sweat?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Swaleh<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s5\">: <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Three things<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"s9\"><strong>1.Strength<\/strong><\/div>\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s5\">There is a hormone called adrenaline<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. When one decides to<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> speak<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> among people, it pours into their blood<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0and brings fear- your voice could even get shaky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s5\">Due to my debating background, that hormone had nothing on me<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"s9\"><strong>2.\u00a0<span class=\"s5\">Admiration for<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> those who spoke at <\/span><span class=\"s5\">traditional <\/span><span class=\"s5\">wedding <\/span><span class=\"s5\">functions<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s5\">I picked interest and started to learn<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> how to go about each stage of the<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> function. I crammed the words and got more confident.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"s9\"><strong>3.\u00a0<span class=\"s5\">The zeal<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> to practis<\/span><span class=\"s5\">e.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s5\">In this era, most people<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019s zeal is exhibited in allowing to<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> get trained or act as<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">messenger (<\/span><span class=\"s6\">katumwa<\/span><span class=\"s6\">). <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Y<\/span><span class=\"s5\">ou get to understand who is coming next at a function.<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> I did not necessarily have to do that but<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> I picked tips<\/span><span class=\"s5\">whenever I could, through practice<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">What motivates\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s8\">the emcees<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> to learn to speak at functions<\/span><span class=\"s8\">?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s8\">Swaleh<\/span><span class=\"s8\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"s9\">1. <strong><span class=\"s5\">Respect <\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<p class=\"s11\"><span class=\"s5\">You admire to be accorded respect as a father so you start to imitate that by<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> being <\/span><span class=\"s5\">prideful <\/span><span class=\"s5\">and speaking rather respectfully as a father, which <\/span><span class=\"s5\">draws people\u2019s attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s11\">\u200b<\/p>\n<div class=\"s9\">2. <span class=\"s5\">It is an income-generating activity<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"s11\"><span class=\"s5\">There is <\/span><span class=\"s5\">currently <\/span><span class=\"s5\">a shortage of jobs but there are a number of <\/span><span class=\"s5\">traditional <\/span><span class=\"s5\">functions taking place,<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> one can decide to do emceeing<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> The many<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> functions<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> happening<\/span><span class=\"s5\">draw<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> people\u2019s attention towards emceeing<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"s9\">3. <span class=\"s5\">The need to professionalize the arrangement to speak at functions<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> is a catalyst to people\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> desire to gain experience<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> and their interest in <\/span><span class=\"s5\">promoting cu<\/span><span class=\"s5\">l<\/span><span class=\"s5\">ture<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><span class=\"s5\">Associations are formed and aspiring emcees recruited and trained<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> to speak at traditional wedding functions.<\/span><span class=\"s5\">T<\/span><span class=\"s5\">he associations rely a lot on culture so they can fulfil the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">wedding cultural norms<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Is there a particular school <\/span><span class=\"s8\">one can attend and<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> pay a particular amount to become an emcee?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Swal<\/span><span class=\"s8\">eh<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s8\"><strong>:<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"s5\">There is not yet an organized commitment to set up meaningful schools. <\/span><span class=\"s5\">The industry is still at a local <\/span><span class=\"s5\">level. Y<\/span><span class=\"s5\">ouths<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> who <\/span><span class=\"s5\">admire to become emcees are quite the number<\/span><span class=\"s5\">yet families who arrange functions want famous emcees<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> who have most probably been at it for long<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. A famous emcee shall want to do all his functions on his own so his name remains upheld. <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Even if he decided to train people<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, he won<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s5\">t take them to functions to perform<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">practical<\/span><span class=\"s5\">ly<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. Although internally, at a local level, people are setting up small clubs\/associations to drive this agenda. Usually the young gents assist as entertainers or messengers in the background at functions<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> and<\/span><span class=\"s5\">learn<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Why the association formation? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Swaleh<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s8\"><strong>:<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Due to competition by emcees at functions as they tried to show off their best skills usually by punishing the groom\u2019s side, say by asking the groom and his escorts to kneel when they <\/span><span class=\"s5\">arrived late<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, functions got spoilt and time was wasted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s5\">People then started to form groups\/associations; when one emcee lands a tender to work at a function, they prov<\/span><span class=\"s5\">ide another emcee with whom they\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s5\">d work well together and be in synch throughout the function. They make sure to keep time, share the payment <\/span><span class=\"s5\">in peace <\/span><span class=\"s5\">and strive not to<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> complicate the function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">How are you able to set the price as an emcee<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> and how much do emcees usually charge<\/span><span class=\"s8\">?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Swaleh<\/span><span class=\"s8\">:<\/span> <\/strong><span class=\"s5\">When it comes to payments, it depends on the family you\u2019re going to work with bu<\/span><span class=\"s5\">t it does range between <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Shs<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">1m<\/span><span class=\"s5\">and <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Shs<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">300k<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">The status of the family and size of the function is a great guiding factor as we set the price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s5\">The kind of entertainment that the family wants in the function <\/span><span class=\"s5\">is also a great determinant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s5\">At the moment, there are emcees who come with a public address system<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. That definitely makes it more expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Can families do without emcees at functions?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Swaleh<\/span><span class=\"s8\">:<\/span><\/strong> <span class=\"s5\">Usually families require resource contributions to<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> set their\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0functions<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">in motion<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. When <\/span><span class=\"s5\">it so happens <\/span><span class=\"s5\">that families are searching for money, some family members or friends who have confidence to speak at other functions suc<\/span><span class=\"s5\">h as funerals and <\/span><span class=\"s5\">church <\/span><span class=\"s5\">impose<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> themselves <\/span><span class=\"s5\">on the role of emceeing the traditional wedding <\/span><span class=\"s5\">as a contribution instead of giving money. These downgrade the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">better-knowing <\/span><span class=\"s5\">emcees of introduction functions and in most cases end up destroying <\/span><span class=\"s5\">the function<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s12\">The challenging part is that the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">love for money<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> get<\/span><span class=\"s5\">s some people<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> jealous as they <\/span><span class=\"s5\">wonder why the money is not going to them as emcees eveb<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0though they are n<\/span><span class=\"s5\">ot well suited for the role<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. They <\/span><span class=\"s5\">then speak ill of<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> emcees forcing families to do away with real emceeing<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"s9\"><strong><span class=\"s5\">What are some of the challenges you face?<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s5\">Some people who arrange functions haven\u2019t been at functions themselves. <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Striving to help them understand<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> that a f<\/span><span class=\"s5\">unction requires emcees might get<\/span><span class=\"s5\">tiresome<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s5\">When emcees are not in association<\/span><span class=\"s5\">; <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Some emcees get too dramatic and end up wasting time especially on the bride<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s5\">s side. They ask the man\u2019s side to pay fine<\/span><span class=\"s5\">s<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, kne<\/span><span class=\"s5\">el and walk on your knees as they come to the bride\u2019s side<\/span><span class=\"s5\">and punish them in more ways than one. In the end, such an emcee challenges the emcee on the groom\u2019s side, wastes their time and spoils the flow of the function<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">How are you able to synch conversations<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> as emcees from both the bride and groom\u2019s side?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Swaleh<\/span><span class=\"s8\">: <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s5\">The groom\u2019s side has to be submissive to the bride<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s5\">s<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s5\">If anything, you can even go and sweet talk the brides side through the emcee before the function, you could tell him about the weaknesses of the groom<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> and his escorts<\/span><span class=\"s5\">&#8211; for instance if they don\u2019t <\/span><span class=\"s5\">have envelopes of fines or their desire to keep the function short and simple. <\/span><span class=\"s5\">That private <\/span><span class=\"s5\">pre-t<\/span><span class=\"s5\">alk helps the synching of conversation.<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> As emcee, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">you have to either come early and do that or get the contact of the emcee on the bride\u2019s side and speak before the function<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Where do you see the emcee industry in years to come<\/span><span class=\"s8\">?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s8\">Swaleh<\/span><span class=\"s8\">:\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">According to me, this industry shall <\/span><span class=\"s5\">continue\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s5\">1. Copy\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">the western culture<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0which dilutes the African culture that\u2019s meant to be upheld at <\/span><span class=\"s5\">traditional <\/span><span class=\"s5\">introduction function<\/span><span class=\"s5\">s<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. E<\/span><span class=\"s5\">mcee<\/span><span class=\"s5\">s themselves<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> have the arrangement<\/span><span class=\"s5\">,<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> for instance<\/span><span class=\"s5\">,<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> that western music sho<\/span><span class=\"s5\">uld entertain people other than tunes from the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">African musical instruments such as drums, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">adungu<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">embaire<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> (xylophones).<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"s9\">2. <span class=\"s5\">The words of conversation<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> between emcees<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> are now getting too dramatic- At a point, people shall not recognize the point in having emcees for this kind of event<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. Comedy such as\u2026 <\/span><span class=\"s5\">a long time ago there was a culture of <\/span><span class=\"s6\">okutta<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">omukago<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">\u2013 eating coffee seeds and taking water- those coffee seeds were called <\/span><span class=\"s6\">entaba<\/span><span class=\"s6\">luganda<\/span><span class=\"s6\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">Today if you find born-<\/span><span class=\"s5\">again Christians, they shall claim<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> that coffe<\/span><span class=\"s5\">e seeds are demonic<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. That sort of drama eradicates original culture and people have instead considered using groundnut seeds yet they want to make the function interesting and fulfil the culture of <\/span><span class=\"s6\">entaba<\/span><span class=\"s6\">luganda.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"s9\">3. <span class=\"s5\">The element of money<\/span><span class=\"s5\">&#8211; <\/span><span class=\"s5\">The famous emcees are so expensive. Most families are not into funding expensive budgets for emceeing, they\u2019d rather handle that part <\/span><span class=\"s5\">internally <\/span><span class=\"s5\">by picking on say a family member who is known for speaking at family funerals. This shall make people shun a good emcee<\/span><span class=\"s5\">ing role and do it on their own and in the long run <\/span><span class=\"s5\">destroy<\/span><span class=\"s5\">s<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> the industry<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"s9\">4. <span class=\"s5\">There is hardly the<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> promise of s<\/span><span class=\"s5\">ustainability<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> in this industry.<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">Trends shift<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> quite fast. <\/span><span class=\"s5\">We\u2019re in an era of <\/span><span class=\"s5\">wanna<\/span><span class=\"s5\">-being. Any copied thing is integrated with new tricks and the original product is destroyed.<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> There is no sustainability. <\/span><span class=\"s5\">If one is<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> a great emcee, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">a <\/span><span class=\"s5\">moment shall come when they<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> can no longer speak at functions. While I was studying at Bishop Senior School, we had a Luganda <\/span><span class=\"s5\">teacher called <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Sewa<\/span><span class=\"s5\">nonda<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. He was conversant with the Luganda proverbial sayings<\/span><span class=\"s5\">,<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> which gave him a high stake at speaking at traditional functions. In a few years, he\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s5\">s no where to be found<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.
