Nikah is therefore defined as the contract enacted between a man and woman for the purpose of enjoying each other and forming a good family through the ways ordered by Allah and His Messenger Muhammad.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5401\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5401\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5401 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-2-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The nikah, which is the actual ceremony is conducted between the groom and the father or guardian of the bride, who is a Muslim, and not the bride.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Elements of a Muslim marriage <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Muslim marriage is conducted amongst six people \u2013 the bride, groom, bride\u2019s parents, two witnesses chosen by the couple and the Imam who is to officiate the Nikah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny person who is capable of marriage and has reached marriage age should get married. If not he\/she is accountable to Allah,\u201d says Sheik Muniru Sebintu secretary for Dawa Uganda Muslim Supreme Council.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5402\" src=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-3-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He adds that a Muslim engagement can take place anywhere, anytime, any day as long as the girl\u2019s parents are aware and have permitted the marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Sebintu also notes that marriage has to be between two Muslims; you are not allowed to marry anyone who is not a Muslim unless you have persuaded them to convert to Islam.<\/p>\n<p>He also notes that a Muslim wedding is governed by four things.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5403\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5403 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leilah Nalubega on her wedding day. COURTESY PHOTOS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The bride\u2019s consent <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leilah Nalubega a recently married woman notes that the bride\u2019s consent or permission is paramount. She says that a bride has to willingly agree to the marriage and not be forced. This is why a bride is asked whether she is willing to get married to that particular man.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parent\u2019s approval <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sebintu notes that in Islam, a parent plays a great role in their children\u2019s marriage. \u201cA woman cannot independently give herself in marriage,\u201d and in case her parents don\u2019t agree to it, the marriage can\u2019t be approved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5404\" src=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-5.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-5-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call it Wali\u2019s approval, in the Islamic terms. This can be a protector, parent or guardian. These give a go ahead for the marriage to take place,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mahr<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The third and extremely important component is mahr which is a mandatory payment, in the form of money or possessions paid by the groom, or by groom&#8217;s father, to the bride at the time of marriage that legally becomes her property. In most cases this is discussed between the man and his wife before the marriage date,\u201d Isa Mubiru, a married man says.<\/p>\n<p>Musa Yahaya another recently wed groom adds that mahr can be negotiable between bride and groom. It can be given on the same day or a promise made for it to be given later and there should be agreement on when it will be paid.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5405\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5405\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5405 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-6.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-6-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Many Muslim brides will wear henna of different designs to make them look good.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Henna<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Nalubega, henna is an Islamic tradition that most brides embrace to achieve beauty although it\u2019s not a must-have. Henna is done by an expert in henna designing who usually comes with multiple designs in a book from which the bride makes a choice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Publicising the marriage <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sheik Sebintu notes that publicising the marriage is also a condition of a marriage contract.<\/p>\n<p>The Nikah is then conducted between the groom and the father or guardian of the bride \u201cwho is a Muslim\u201d and not the bride.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-0.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5406\" src=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-0.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-0-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sebintu notes that the groom\u2019s parents don\u2019t take part in exchanging vows because it\u2019s believed that once a man is ready to marry, he is independent and can make informed decisions.\u00a0 The rest of the congregation are regarded as spectators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter nikah, a document or marriage contract is signed that shows the validity of the marriage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kutubul Nikah <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a sermon (preaching) that is done by the sheikh and in most cases centres on marriage, for example how to conduct yourself or handle your marriage. Mubiru adds that the husband then has to sponsor a feast to celebrate with family and friends who have witnessed the wedding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5408\" src=\"http:\/\/mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-7.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mywedding.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/leila-7-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dress code <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mosque dress code for women is supposed to be long dresses or skirts that cover up to the ankles and are not tight on the body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is supposed to have a veil on their heads and with long sleeved clothes to honour the mosque rules though sometimes people violate them which is not good,\u201d Nalubega says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Zuurah Karungi In Islam, the process of wedding is referred to as Nikah.
