Jedidiah Ogunleye, the mother of Nigerian singer/songwriter, Simisola Ogunleye, popularly known as Simi, called out her son-in-law over her daughter’s incomplete bride price payments.
This all went down when Adekunle, Simi’s husband, who is also a Nigerian artist, posted a picture of himself rocking dreadlocks with a caption;
“Give me a dope rapper name.”
Teasingly, his wife dropped a comment on the picture saying;
“Nigga stop. Lol.” To which he replied, “Awon Egbon e nigga,” loosely translated as ‘Big nigga’
Simi’s mother eventually joined the conversation and she jokingly commented,
“Adekunle, remember you’ve not finished paying all the dowry o. I am watching you.”
The Joromi hit artist first met her husband through Facebook when Simi was still doing gospel music and Adekunle was a graphic designer. When they met at a concert one day, their relationship matured into a romantic one. Their traditional wedding later took place on Victoria Island, Nigeria. It was a private ceremony where only close family members, friends and a few celebrity friends were invited.
The celebrity couple surprised fans earlier this year when they got married in a beautiful wedding ceremony at a beach in Lagos.
We hope the statement from Simi’s mother was simply a joke but one thing is for sure, paying bride price is very important in many African societies and a key aspect for men to take note of.
