The people of Uganda have been reeling in shock following the news of Sheikh Mohammed Mutumba who unknowingly tied the knot with a fellow man, Richard Tumushabe alias Swabullah Nabukeera, in an Islamic marriage ceremony (Nikah).
While initially Tumushabe who disguised as a woman was taken into custody, Sheikh Mohammed was also later remanded by police and charged with having carnal knowledge with a person against the order of nature, the two were remanded to Ntenjeru prison.
The Imam appeared before the Kayunga Grade One magistrate, Ms Irene Akello on Thursday but was not allowed to take plea because his case can only be heard by a higher court.
The entire mix up took place in December 2019 and the two are to reappear in court on January 24 for further hearing of the cases against them.
Everything was unveiled when the alleged bride was being searched by the police after being charged for stealing a television set and clothes of their neighbour, this is when his real gender was discovered.
According to Kayunga District Police Commander, Mr John Lukooto, Tumushabe had tricked a number of men to fall in love with her and later stole their money.
Mr Lukooto also said one of the victims from Mayuge District came to Kayunga police station and testified that Tushabe once fooled them claiming ’she’ was their relative and they needed to receive her husband, when the day for the introduction reached, ‘she’ claimed he had gotten an accident on the way to the function and died.
Mr Lukooto said the relatives collected Shs400, 000 which they gave ‘her’ to go and attend the burial of the husband but ‘she’ never came back.
The accused has not denied the accusation, saying its poverty that has led to his misguided choices.
