The Chinese government has asked its citizens to postpone their wedding ceremonies that were scheduled for Sunday, February 2, 2020 in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.
According to Daily Mail, the couples getting married were disappointed because February 2 is considered a lucky date for the wedding ceremonies taking place this year.
The day is special because the sequence of numbers, 02-02-2020’, is the first global palindrome day in 909 years, meaning it reads the same backwards as forwards. After that, it will be 908-year wait until the next one happens on 03-03-3030.
Major cities like Beijingi, Shanghai had earlier decided to offer wedding registry services on the date, despite it falling on a Sunday when offices are usually closed. However due to the increased numbers of victims of the deadly disease, this wasn’t possible.
In a statement the Chinese civil affairs ministry said, “Where marriage registrations have been announce or promised for February 2 this year, you are advised to cancel it and explain the situation to others.”
The ministry said it would temporarily halt any marriage counselling services and registrations until further notice.
This announcement has come in awake of the death toll rising to 259 with more than 10,000 patients battling the deadly epidemic.
The virus, which was first detected early this year has put the whole world on high alert with several countries cancelling flights to China.
