Polyandry is a form of polygamy in which a woman is married to more than one man at the same time. This arrangement is unacceptable by customs and the laws in many countries.
This week, however, there was controversy in northern Nigeria as a 37-year old woman identified as Hauwa Ali Mariri was accused of being married to two men.
According to Lawn Ibrahim Fagge, the public relations officer of the sharia police, Hauwa was arrested on Monday, 24 February 2020 and released shortly after.
In a statement, Fagge revealed that Hauwa’s first husband, Bello Ibrahim, 45 years old, was critically ill and was taken to a village for treatment. Since it took him long to come back, this made her presume that he was dead hence marrying second husband, Bala Abdulsalam, 40 years old.
The public relations officer further revealed that the Muslim woman went ahead to stay with her new husband in her matrimonial home after they were married.
“When Ibrahim, her first husband recovered from the sickness, he was brought back to the house only to find that she was married to another man,” he added.
Hauwa denied the allegations saying Ibrahim divorced her before he traveled to the village where he has been recovering from his sickness.
The woman said after the divorce, she felt free and had remarried 35-year-old Bala Adulsalem who paid a sum of Shs203, 000 as her bride price.
Ibrahim, on the other hand, denies the divorce claims, saying he never separated from his wife and he asked her to provide the evidence.
In northern Nigeria it is reported that divorce can be carried out either through words of mouth or by a letter.
In Hauwa’s two-year marriage to the second husband, she has produced a child and is presently pregnant with another one.
Right now, Hauwa has moved out of her first husband’s house leaving her children behind. Her second husband, on the other hand, has been told to remain in Kano state pending the conclusion of the case.
According to Gwani Murtala, a local commander of the Sharia police of Kumbotso, this case is a rare one and he does not know what the end would be.
