During wedding planning, a couple may tend to focus on the details that are needed at the ceremonies. In the process, it is easy to forget small prior details like choosing the location for dressing up which has a huge impact on how comfortable and at ease you feel as you are getting ready.
Some of the most common locations have been either at home, saloon or a hotel. They each have a share of their pros and cons which have been experienced by different couples over the past years.
We bring you each in details so that you can weigh the positives and negatives before you make a final decision on where to dress up from.
Getting prepared either at your place or your parent’s home has been one of the first considered places to dress up from. This is common with traditional weddings because in most cases the function happens at the same place. However, for religious weddings, the couple may choose to forego it because the church or mosque and reception venues may be far.
Here are the pros and cons of dressing up at home.
Home is comforting
The comfort of your home is more relaxing than any other place especially in moments when you get nervous hours before the function.
Susan Kayeny, a wedding planner says it is actually easy to be yourself and crack jokes with your loved ones because you are familiar with the environment.
“You will enjoy having your closest family members and near you in the hours before you walk down the aisle,” she adds.
No need to move around
“Getting ready at home has the convenience of not having to pack up and move to another location with your accessories, dresses, shoes and many other small details, “says Kayeny.
She adds this limits the possibility of forgetting anything in the process of moving from one place to another.
Hair and makeup stylists can come to you
These days there are hair and make artists who have no problem helping you get ready for the ceremony at home.
Kayeny explains that hair and make-up stylists know that traveling and working out of the comfort of their offices is a useful services for their clients especially those having functions upcountry.
Memorable photos and videos are guaranteed
Your wedding photos and videos can be more memorable if they are captured in the setting of your home.
According to James Opoka, an events photographer, the couple can also have their photographers take photos and videos of their family members while getting ready along with them at home.
He says this adds a variety to the pictures apart from the usual concentration on the bride and groom.
Assistance is available
It is very easy for the dressing room to become messy as the wedding entourage is getting ready for the day. This is not conducive in case the couple is taking pre-wedding shots.
To avoid burdening your entourage with cleaning up every clutter while getting dressed, home is the place where you can readily request a relative to help out.
Actually, he/she can easily take up the responsibility of answering your phone calls and updating the service providers in case of anything.
If the home is distant from the wedding venues
Unless your home is a few kilometers away from the wedding venue, you may have a bit of challenge getting to the religious venue on time. Let’s not forget encountering delays like traffic jam while on the road to your ceremony. Additionally, some churches have a wedding every hour and will be
It requires more coordination
”Getting ready at home requires more coordination to ensure that everything goes smoothly,” says Renzioni Hills, a Ghanian wedding planner based in Kampala.
He explains that a lot of coordination is needed in preparing the dressing spaces and arranging breakfast for the entire entourage.
“It can become a stressful factor for the bride or groom if there is a disorganised arrangement while they are getting ready for the day,” Renzioni adds.
Opoka shares of a wedding ceremony where she advised the bride to forego taking pictures at her home because the house was a mess.
“I noticed that she was getting stressed out yelling at the people around her to organise the house quickly,” he shared. “Since time was running out, I advised her to maximise the photos that I would be taking during the ceremony.”
There may be interruptions
Getting ready from home with no controlled access to dressing look can prove to be hectic with endless interruption.
Kayeny says that it can prove to be hectic while getting ready at home because of the endless interruptions.
Renzioni reveals that everyone would want to take a look at the bride’s look and want to give an opinion on whether they are smart or not.
He adds that it is actually easy to receive bad news about something going wrong in the wedding preparations.
Kayeny shares of a wedding she co-ordinated where the bride cried after her mother expressed her disappointment in her choice of gown.
She says the bride regretted getting dressed from home knowing fully well how her mother is an outspoken critic.
Before people who found it inconveniencing getting ready at home opted for the spaces at their hair salons. However, since saloons also lack privacy, some couples have upgraded to checking in hotel suites for convenience.
We bring you the pros and cons of the privilege of opting for a hotel.
Ample Space guaranteed
In a hotel you are free to book a suite or more rooms with enough space to accommodate you and your entourage. This means you will all have enough space to get ready and also place your bags.
The advantage is that if you happen to be spending your wedding night in the same room, your overnight bag can stay put.
Less coordination is needed
There is less coordination needed in preparing meals and ensuring the rooms are clean because the hotel takes care of all this.
Renzioni recommends that for an easier morning routine, spend the night before with your entourage so that you have extra time to sleep in and more time to figure out if you forgot something.
You can get better photos/Videos
Hotels are usually beautifully decorated which can provide a perfect backdrop for your photos.
Opoka says most couples who want quality pre-wedding photos opt for hotels. He says this because hotels have spacious rooms, elegant furniture and large windows that provide plenty of natural light which are essential for clear and elegant pictures.
It saves lots of time
For couples residing in places far away from your religious venue, you have the advantage of booking a hotel that is accessible. This means you will save time and won’t need to deal with a worry of a traffic jam delaying you.
Jane Nandutu Okello, a fashion designer who got married early last year says she booked a hotel in Kibuli that was not far from their officiating venue, St Stephen’s Church of Uganda, Kisugu.
She says this is because they lived in Mukono and had no relative in Kampala residing around the surrounding areas of the church or reception.
Hair and make-up people can come to you
There is the flexibility of paying for a room where your hair and make-up artists can spend a night with you at the hotel. This easy access means they can timely work carry out their duties.
The other option is having them come to your hotel location in the morning to work on you.
During an interview with the magazine last year, Vanessa Kemigabo Ssenfuma, the proprietor of V_glow256 Make up Studio who got married in May 2018 revealed that she booked an extra room for her make-up artist to spend a night with them.
She said this helped in minimising the possibilities of the make-up artist coming late the next day.
It is expensive
Booking a night in a hotel can be pricy especially if you are to include your entourage. This can be an unnecessary expense for some couples especially if they are working on a tight budget.
You will need to pack items for the day
To spend a night in a hotel, you have to pack everything from your dresses to other emergency items that will be needed during the day. This means you ensure every needed item is packed to avoid forgetting anything.
Nandutu shares that she actually forgot at home the shoes she was supposed to put on after changing into her reception dress.
The fashion designer says she had to just wear her bridal gown shoes for both the ceremonies.
After weighing the pros and cons of each of these locations, we hope you will be able to decide which space will be comfortable and convenient as you are getting ready for your wedding day.
