The coronavirus outbreak which originated from Wuhan, China seemed like a far cry away, a few months back. Now, however, it is affecting life as we know it all over the globe. Many businesses are on a standstill well as other people have been forced to stay home for safety. This has not only affected many people’s social life but also their earning.
One of the people that has felt this pinch directly is cake baker Julian Mugero. The baker on Friday took to a Facebook group of cake baking enthusiasts, Cake Shop Uganda to decry her loss, “Hi guys, banange as a result of this Coronavirus a client canceled their function which was due this weekend.” she shared, adding a photo of four cakes, seemingly of a traditional wedding that she was left with.
Hoping for some financial redemption, she added, “I am selling these cakes off at 60k [Shs60,000] each and the flavours are marble, orange and french vanilla and it will be fully iced.”
Many people sympathised with her, while others offered advice and encouragement to others to buy the cakes.
Other people however pointed out to the baker that her misfortune wasn’t to be faulted on the couple, as they too were suffering as a result of the ban. This she said she acknowledged.
” They had paid the whole fee. I do not want to bother them now on how we shall account for this as they are still in the healing process,’ Magero told My Wedding.
When one user suggested that she keeps the cakes for a month, another found this suggestion bizarre. She replied, “This reminds me of a client who ordered cake in November and never turned up, then the cakes were given to me for my January introduction yet rotten. The baker couldn’t loose, she just redecorated them to my style, can’t forget that woman nor will I ever recommend her to anyone.”
Luckily enough, Magero was able to sell all the cakes.
Another baker also posted, “Owing to the recent presidential directive, we have unfortunately had some cancellations and now have this Chocolate and Vanilla cake available for sale at 90k, with free delivery to areas within 8Km of our Kireka studio. The cake is filled and covered with chocolate pistachio buttercream and topped with sprinkles, fresh strawberries, Oreo & meringue cookies.
She was also able to get a client.
While many businesses may face a hard time, this goes to show that if only you try, there could still be a way to get work done.
