On Saturday, March 21, Mr Jimmy Sekimpi married Dr. Joy Kemirembe Semambo in a wedding attended by a total of five people at Kampala Evangelical Free Church.
The people in attendance were the bride, groom and three witnesses who included their matron, best man and the priest who officiated their union.
The couple was dressed smartly like any would-be marrieds at their wedding. The groom wore an ensemble of blue and white while his bride wore a beautiful off-shoulder cinderella gown embroidered with leafy patterns. She also had beautiful jewellery with minimal makeup and a well-made hairdo.
Their best man and matron also graced the occasion very well dressed, the best man matching the groom’s attire, and the matron in a blue dress to coordinate well with them.
According to a post by the groom’s brother on Facebook, the couple did not hold a reception after but went ahead to enjoy their day together as newlyweds. The brother also revealed that family members kept cheering them on through a family WhatsApp group.
This wedding follows the president’s national address where all weddings were postponed for 32 days, with an exception of scientific weddings (Weddings attended by not more than 10 people). This was done in an effort to fight the spread of coronavirus in Uganda.
People on Facebook had different reactions to the couple’s wedding. Some showed discontentment,
“I guess no professional camera men were allowed in as well,” a Facebook user going by Hon Thadeous commented.
“Sincerely, couldn’t they postpone…” Nelson Muganga commented.
Others were however very supportive of what the couple did.
“Mine too is gonna be like this in few weeks to come, God bless this couple so much,” commented a one Phiona Nanziri.
“All things are possible, congs to the bold couple,” Shanice Muwanguzi added.
“Man you saved,” Herbert Mpaka commented, referring to how much less the couple must have spent in comparison to the usual weddings.
Other couples seem to be embracing smaller weddings as well. Journalist Samson Kasumba posted on his Twitter about an SDA couple that did the same.
A scientific wedding in the SDA Church witnessed by Pastor Lubwama. There are those that are willing to comply with the guidelines given and this is what we want during these times. Amen. pic.twitter.com/Qjk3WT503A

My Wedding applauds the couples for making it official without putting their loved ones at risk. As Uganda has confirmed its first case of the coronavirus/COVID19, we need to be more vigilant but also not forget to celebrate the meaningful things that life blesses us with.
