For some time now, we have followed a standard routine of how a wedding is supposed to go down. A couple gets ready from a hotel, salon or residential, they make their way to a mosque for nikkah or church where they exchange vows, and before you know it, you are already at the reception listening to speeches, cutting the cake, and soon everyone will be heading back to their homes.
Many people have grown accustomed to this routine but come to think of it, where is the fun in everything. Guests like seeing something different, something entertaining, which is why a majority of couples have switched it up and introduced ‘wedding games’. These are little fun activities that will create excitement and interactivity at the ceremony.
If you haven’t heard of these games or you would like to know more about them, My Wedding brings you a list some of the easiest games you can prepare for guests to have a memorable day.
The shoe game
This game has become one of the most popular games that couples opt to playing on their wedding day. The game is all about revealing a few truths concerning the couple to their guests and testing how well they really know each other. Wondering on how to play it? Here are a few details;
Place two chairs back to back in the Centre of the room where your guests can clearly see you. Remove one of your shoes and trade it to your partner. The Emcee will have some questions prepared about your relationship. All you have to do is hold up the shoe of your partner or yours, depending on who you feel fits to be the answer to the question.
To make things a little more interesting, the Emcee can distribute some papers to the audience in order for them to come up with a few questions of their own, that they will later hand into the Emcee so that they can be read out.
Make sure that the Emcee can at least let them know that the questions need to start with ‘who’ for example;
Who said I love you first?
Who has the better singing voice?
Who eats faster?
Who has the best sense of style?
Who is more confident?
Who spends the most time on social media?
Who is the responsible one?
However, these questions need to be properly revised before they can be read the outline to avoid disclosure of any offensive information.
The bottle game
The bottle game is one of the most interesting games because the party shifts from the bride and groom, to the guests themselves. A one Juliet Kamara that planned this game for her wedding helps us explain how it entirely goes down.
According to her, all you have to do is find time before the wedding and get a bottle that will easily stand out. If you can’t find one, you can basically just design one with some unique wrapping papers or colour shades.
Get small pieces of papers and write down different activities that you would like your guests to do.
“They don’t have to be detailed but rather understandable. You can put things like, rap for the bride, sing a nursery rhyme, dance, crack a joke, anything that you feel will entertain your guests,” says Kamara.
She further explains that the papers can now be folded up and put in the bottle and on the day of the wedding, let the bottle go around as the music plays. Whoever holds the bottle when the music stops should pick a paper from the bottle and do whatever it says.
Kamara also cautions that for this game to be fair and interesting, you should set a fine that is a bit high for those that might not want to participate so that they can be forced to engage, “Setting a small fine fee may just become an excuse for everyone so it is better you set the bar quite high.”
The blindfold game can be a bit tricky but the most fun part about it is the fact that it keeps everyone on their toes, bride and groom inclusive.
How to play;
A chair is put in a clear space where everyone can see and the groom will then be blindfolded and led to occupy the chair. A few girls are selected to line up, it can be the bridesmaids and or some girls from the audience but whichever the case, the bride must be inclusive. The groom will then have to feel the several hands and guess which one of them belongs to his bride.
The game can still switch turns and the bride can occupy the seat and try to figure out which hand belongs to her groom.
The dancing competition can be done in many ways, so you can choose whichever pleases you.
A few people can be chosen from the audience or volunteer to compete against each other as the rest of the guests choose who they think is best at it. To make this quit more interesting, you can put up a prize for the winner so as to encourage as many people as possible to participate.
The other way dancing competitions can be done at a wedding is putting up a dance battle between the bride and her bridesmaids versus the groom and his groomsmen. Both parties can choose the songs they would like to dance to, and also do some training before the wedding arrives in order to put up a great show.
You don’t have to limit yourself to those listed. You can get creative with the dance competition and put up your own way of how you want it to be done. It can be the matron verses best man, in-laws competing against each other, the grownups verses the young generation, anyway that you may please as long as it can bring fun to the table.
If you have attended a children’s sports day or maybe your own at a tender age, you will probably be familiar with this one. Here, the participants dance around a couple of chairs that are placed in a spacious environment. There is usually one chair less than the actual number of participants and when the music stops, each individual has to take a seat.
The participant without a seat at the end of the round drops out. The cycle is repeated until there is one chair left with two participants competing to occupy it. The one that grabs the seat first will emerge the winner of the game.
The fun thing about karaoke is that you get to see people fight to get the lyrics of a song right and this might be the funniest thing you will ever witness.
All you have to do is ask the deejay to prepare a list of 10 popular songs that he will play for your guests to sing to. You can also make the game more interesting and ask the Emcee to randomly choose any guest from the audience to perform a certain song. As the person chosen is performing, the Emcee can quietly ask the deejay to stop the music randomly and the guest will have to continue singing with the music is off.
The struggle of knowing which line of the lyrics comes after the other is the most exciting part. Sometimes your level of knowing a song can be highly dependent on the fact that the song is actually playing in the background but when it stops, things might go bizarre.
Don’t limit yourself to just these. There are probably many unique games out there that you can involve your guests in and for them to witness an event that they might consider glorious.
