King Benjamin 35, wedded his beautiful wife Centrina Kyohairwe, 30 on August 8, 2020 at Uganda Martyrs Town Parish Mbarara after being connected by his Uncle by phone in 2017. The couple spoke with us about their union.
When and how did you meet?
King: It was in June 2017; it was a connection by my uncle Bicknell Mathius
Centrina: His uncle Bick is the one who connected us on the phone and it was in December 2016 but we came to see each other in June 2017.
Today, people frown upon being matched, what made you allow his uncle’s introductions?
Centrina: At first, I thought that he (Bicknell) was joking, but later he started telling me about his nephew, his job where he was staying. One evening he called his nephew and told him to speak to a female friend where we shared our contacts from there. We then continued talking for two months until the day he came back from Kabamba. He came and we saw each other, I liked him and then we started dating.
When did the two of you become close?
King: In October 2017 after completing my Cadet Course in the UPDF.
What attracted you to each other?
King: Her character. She is well behaved and hardworking.
Centrina: His braveness, kind and loving nature that is in him and being so caring.
So, it was love at first sight?
Centrina: Yes, it was the first impression.
What was her response?
King: To go ahead and start a relationship
How did you get her to accept your marriage proposal?
King: I took her out for dinner after I knelt down on my knees, proposed to her and she accepted my proposal by allowing me to put an engagement ring on her finger.
When did you do your introduction?
King: After the first meeting, three months later, we went for our first visit in Katenga sub-county Mitooma district, and thereafter had our introduction in 2018. After that, we started staying together. On July 5, 2020, we set our wedding for August.
Isn’t one month a short time to organise a wedding?
King: We wanted to take advantage of COVID lockdown and how it made weddings cheaper. It had taken us long to wed and we took it as a chance to get our wedding done.
What was your budget and how did you raise the funds?
King: it was Shs10m and it was our cash at hand and contribution from our friends and well-wishers
Centrina: It was mobilization of funds from friends, relatives and our own cash.
What was the most expensive item?
King: The Groom’s suit and the bride’s gown.
Centrina: Bride’s gown.
Did you involve a planner?
King: No, since it was Covid-19, we simply assembled relatives to plan for our wedding.
How did you come up with the guest list?
King: we considered our parents and friends from all sides
Centrina: Since it was Covid-19, we were selecting a few friends of our friends, relatives and parents with a just a limited number of 25 people.
Were you disappointed in any way?
King: No everything went as planned
How long did it take you to prepare for the function?
King: It took us basically one month.
Centrina: Since it was scientific, it never took us much time to plan and prepare.
What did you enjoy the most on that day?
King: Dancing with my wife.
Centrina: Seeing myself in a gown and taking an oath in front of everyone.
What was going through your mind during the ceremony?
King: Enjoyment only because I did not have debts
Centrina: It was enjoyment and thinking about our honeymoon
What is your advice to those planning such functions?
King: They should for simple but very organized functions.
Centrina: You should not plan for what you cannot afford because you can end up selling your property due to debts accumulated from your own wedding.
How did you feel when he revealed wedding plans?
Centrina: I was excited because it was a surprise to me
What was your colour theme?
Centrina: It was navy blue, baby pink and red,
How much was your attire?
King: Eight Hundred Thousand shillings only (Shs 800,000)
Centrina: One Million shillings only (shs 1000,000)
What challenges did you face during preparations?
Centrina: Delayed contribution from those who pledged.
Did you have any fears on that day?
King: Yes, because the number of people exceeded the planned invited guests.
Did you get any disappointments during the function?
Centrina: The cake was not made the way I expected it and it was very upsetting.
Where did you go for your honeymoon?
Centrina: We went to Queen Elizabeth National Park for our honeymoon
What did you learn from the premarital counselling?
King: To have respect for one another.
Centrina: To be obedient and patient in order to have a happy marriage.
What advice would you give to those intending to get married?
King: Love your partner as much as you can.
Centrina: To always stick to one partner and have good communication.
